Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1973. It is the first of what becomes a series of 39 crime novels featuring a fictional Boston private detective Spenser, who notes that his name is spelled “like the English poet.” The author is a teacher at Northeastern University and this book revolves around the murder of a college student at a “large university [made up of] . . . white brick buildings.” The fictional student, Dennis Powell, is killed in his apartment at 80 Hemenway Street under circumstances strikingly similar to an actual murder that occurs in 2003.* The last novel in the series is is published posthumously in 2011.*
